St Nicholas parades

The St Nicholas processions for well-behaved children

In Alsace, you don't need to wait until Christmas to enjoy a tasty treat! As a “trial run” for the Christmas festivities, on December 6 St Nicholas comes along to put some tasty little presents in the kids’ Christmas stockings, including gingerbread, clementines and “Mannala”, a spongy soft brioche in the shape of a little man. Dressed as a bishop, St Nicholas is often accompanied by Hans Trapp, commonly known as “Père Fouettard”. One of these two rewards well-behaved children, while the other has stern words for the naughty ones. Reward or punishment… which of these two legendary characters will you have to deal with ?
