St Nicholas parades

St Nicholas Day, which falls on 6 December, is a special day for Alsatian children. This is the day when they receive sweets, spice bread and clementines, not forgetting the brioche characters known as "mannala" in the regional dialect. Dressed as a bishop, carrying a crook and sporting a long white beard, St Nicholas makes his way through the streets, an impressive sight for the children, who run up to him for the sweets he hands out!  Often accompanied by a donkey, St Nicholas rewards children who have been good. The Epiphany and Kings’ Cakes

Epiphany, which falls on 6 January, is connected with 3 events: the presentation of Jesus to the Three Wise Men, the first miracle at the Wedding at Cana and the baptism of Christ. In a tradition that crops up all over the world, little Alsatians wouldn't dream of missing the chance to "draw kings". This is a secular tradition that combines fun with eating. The special cake contains a "fève" or miniature figure, and whoever finds it in his slice is elected king or queen for the day.  In the past, a slice of the cake, known as "God's piece" or "the Virgin's piece" or the "poor man's piece" was kept for the first poo

And it is at Christmas time that they take on all their mystery. From Advent to Epiphany, these tales are told and retold. There are also shows on the same themes, featuring strange creatures and often centred on the Christmas Tree. They emphasise values like generosity, fraternity and justice. A Christmas in Alsace is quite a story…a fabulous one !

The advent calendar

According to the tradition of the Latin Church, Advent corresponds to the 4 weeks leading up to Christmas. Every morning during this period, children open a window in their Advent calendar. Originally, this would be a cardboard house with 24 windows, each revealing a verse from the Bible. Over the last few decades, this has evolved into windows containing little chocolates or other small gifts.   Since Antiquity, wreaths of greenery or fir branches have been representative of celebration and the hope of rebirth. In about 1930 in Alsace, this symbol became the Advent wreath. Perpetuating this local tradition, housewives place in one of the rooms a crown made of fir branches decorated w
