Saint Nicholas who is known throughout northern Europe, is the most popular saint in Alsace. He has been venerated here since the 11th century. He is dressed as a bishop and has the attributes of his position – a long red coat, a mitre on his head, a crook in his hand and a long white beard which gives him a benevolent appearance.
