Strasbourg and its region

For almost 500 years now, Strasbourg has experienced its finest moments in December, thanks to its Christmas markets. It was back in 1570, when Strasbourg's Protestant movement was combating the extravagant catholic traditions, that the "Christkindelsmärik" was created to replace the market of Saint Nicolas. The oldest Christmas market is set up each year in the very heart of Strasbourg. The pedestrianised streets around the cathedral (one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture) are brought to life with the delicious fragrances of mulled wine, delicacies and spicy pastries. The brightly lit decorative shop windows also remind visitors of the region's culinary tradition.
